Ok, im pretty sure its my rear pinion seal leaking. Where is the best place to go to get a new one or can I just buy one from Advance Auto? Im not even sure Im typing this in the right area.
u can pick one up at the parts house cheap ....... you dont need nuttin but a screwdriver to get the old one out , no puller or nutn ....... and when installing the new one use something a little bigger than the seal so you can tap it in all at the same time
replaced my pinion seal a few weeks back w/o any issues. Picked it up at Advanced for around $10. Just need to determine if you have the 8.8 or 9.75 differential. I used the following write-up and it was a breeze. Only "odd" tool I needed was a gear puller to pull the pinion out. You'll loose a bit of rear diff fluid, so maybe pick up a bottle to refill - or even do a complete change while your at it. Replace Pinion Seal I used a leftover piece of 3" PVC to press the new seal back in the diff.
I personally would go with a factory Ford part, but I generally order from RockAuto since they'e far less expensive than the dealer. I paid the dealer to tackle this for me as I didn't know how to do it myself but now I'm wishing I did it on my own and saved myself a bundle. Remember that if you're topping up your rear diff fluid you may need friction modifier if you have the factory LSD.
Yup. I've been a member of this forum for a while now, but one of the reasons why I didn't frequent it was often as I did before is because there was very few posts, very little traffic on the site in general. The other F-150 forum I used to be a member of had over 40+ new threads daily, and that's just on the '04-08 discussion. I'd like to see a lot more members out here considering how laid back this site is, and how everyone is pretty cool (so far). Perhaps we just gotta keep it a small, tight-knit community if brothers rather than have it blow up where we have a couple of brothers and a couple of assholes like what happened at the last place I was at. Back to the topic, when I look at the instructions it seems like a pretty straight forward job and that it should not take longer than 1-2 hours to do. Maybe add a bit more if you want to pop off the rear diff cover and do a complete flush of the differential.
