well i've seriously been considering selling both my vehicles and buying a mid size suv (6cyl), mainly because i'm wanting something more practical at this point in my life and the truck is getting to the point where i'm pretty sure its gonna start nickel and diming me to death and i'm tired of driving that small a** escort around

so i've been looking at explorers and jeeps, i've already owned an explorer, it was my first vehicle and was the biggest POS but i loved it, lol

what i want to know is, has anyone ever owned a cherokee or a grand cherokee and what are your thoughts on them?

I've never owned a Cherokee, but I know 4 people that have owned them and all 4 people would never own another one. Numerous problems with the transmissions, brakes.

trannys seem to be a reoccurring theme, the I6 in them run for a long time and so do the 4.0 in the explorers but the trannies go out way b4 from what i understand, we put 210k on my explorer on the orig tranny tho

Im looking at diesel jeep libertys to replace our escape. That could be a good alternative to a cherokee

I got 2 guys at my hunting camp who praise the cherokees... one of them just bought a brand new 2011 and it's pretty sweet, comes stock with air bags and different setting for offroad, like a setting for mud, sand, trail, sloppy mud, something like that

The guy I use to work with parents had there tranny go out with less then 60K on their Cherokee. They let Jeep replace it and it never acted right again or at least that's how they felt. They ended up selling a super nice Cherokee for way less then it was worth just trying to get out of it.

Just be careful if you decide to get a Cherokee, transmissions and brakes were the major complaints from people I knew.

i cant afford a diesel liberty, would be cool tho, main reason i was looking into the cherokee was for the factory solid axle, but being a dd it wont be wheeled that hard so i may just end up looking at explorers, still havent decided yet because i know i'm taking a pretty good loss on the truck but brake lines are looking sketchy along with cooling lines, ps lines, and all the accessories are orig and with 142K idk how much longer they are gonna last all the higher mileage issues are starting to settle in

the diesels are going for around 16k with 70k miles on em, and thats the sport model, no leather but it has power everything. If you can find one with higher miles it could be affordable. But the factory solid axle is nice. personally i think the jeep issues out weigh having the solid axle. thought about a sport trac? you got that solid 4.0 l while still maintaining somewhat of a truck. Just a thought. Im in the same boat, every SUV is either too much, or it has a downside somewhere.

Maybe you can find a nice cherokee thats just had a rebuilt tranny. But I hear horror stories about chrokees, but that inline 6 is a bulletproof motor.

Not sure if you are trying to keep it American or what but I've had/heard nothing but good things with a 4runner. My dad had an 86 until 2000 or so with very little problems beyond regular maintenance with over 200k on it. My mom has an 05 4runner that's real good in snow and hasn't given us issues. My ex had a 00 with over 215k on it when she gave it to her brother and it's still running pretty good last I heard.
